How it works
Downloaded free from NCEES. This site never reproduces any of it - no equations, no tables, no figures. The drill asks where things are, not what they say.
Each prompt names a topic in plain words. You name the section that holds it. The clock gives you 30 seconds an item, which is roughly what the exam gives you.
Accuracy is tracked per handbook section in your browser, so the weak-area rounds are built from your own record rather than from a guess.
The sections you have to be fastest in
Size is the honest proxy for how much a section will cost you when you land in the wrong part of it. These are the six longest in version 10.5.
- Electrical and Computer Engineering
Circuits, machines, signals, electronics, digital logic, and networking
- Civil Engineering
Geotechnical, structural, water resources, transportation, and construction
- Environmental Engineering
Air quality, fate and transport, water and wastewater, and solid waste
- Thermodynamics
Properties, laws, cycles, mixtures, and the steam tables
- Mechanical Engineering
Machine design, manufacturability, GD and T, failure theories, and HVAC
- Mathematics
Algebra through differential equations and numerical methods
Find your discipline
Each hub maps the published NCEES knowledge areas for that exam onto the handbook sections that serve them.
- FE Chemical
The single most common wasted search is looking for mass and energy balance material inside the chemical engineering section. It is not there - that work is done from thermodynamics.
- FE Civil
Water resources questions can be answered from either the fluid mechanics section or the hydrology block inside the civil section, and they carry different material. Knowing which one to open is worth real time.
- FE Electrical and Computer
Control systems are not in the electrical section. They are in instrumentation, measurement and control, forty pages earlier. This catches people every year.
- FE Environmental
Hydrology appears in both the civil and environmental sections with different emphasis. Surface water and open channel work is often faster to find on the civil side.
- FE Industrial and Systems
Probability and statistics and engineering economics together account for a large share of the exam, and neither lives in the industrial section. Drill those two at least as hard.
- FE Mechanical
Vibrations are in the mechanical engineering section, not dynamics. HVAC appears twice: as refrigeration and HVAC cycles inside thermodynamics, and as its own block at the end of the mechanical section.
- FE Other Disciplines
Because there is no home section, every question sends you somewhere different. This is the discipline where knowing the whole table of contents pays off most.

Page numbers here are read from handbook version 10.5 (seventh printing, April 2025), which runs to 502 pages. NCEES revises the handbook and page numbers move with it, which is why the drill asks which section a topic lives in rather than which page.
