Section 18 of 21

Environmental Engineering

Air quality, fate and transport, water and wastewater, and solid waste

What the section holds

Air pollution and its control equipment, indoor air quality, fate and transport of contaminants, landfill material, compaction, population modeling, radiation, sampling and monitoring, wastewater treatment technologies, water treatment technologies, and an energy block covering combustion and energy sources.

Why it matters for your exam

This is the discipline section for Environmental candidates, and Civil candidates reach into it as well because water resources and environmental engineering is a named knowledge area on the civil specification.

How to navigate it

The water and wastewater treatment blocks together take up most of the section and sit at the end of it. Environmental candidates should also know that the civil section carries its own hydrology material, so open channel and groundwater questions can be served from either place.

Page numbers here are read from handbook version 10.5 (seventh printing, April 2025), which runs to 502 pages. NCEES revises the handbook and page numbers move with it, which is why the drill asks which section a topic lives in rather than which page.
