The FE Reference Handbook table of contents, explained

What each of the handbook's sections is for, in what order they appear, and which ones are large enough that you need to know their internal layout.

The general sections come first

The handbook opens with material every discipline needs. Units and conversion factors, then ethics and professional practice, then safety. Those three are small in conceptual weight and large in exam value, because they are examined on every discipline specification and the answers are usually sitting in the text.

Then the technical general sections: mathematics, probability and statistics, chemistry and biology, and the mechanics sequence of statics, dynamics, materials science and mechanics of materials. Then the thermal and flow trio of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. Then instrumentation and engineering economics close the general half.

Then the discipline sections

Six discipline sections follow, in alphabetical order: chemical, civil, environmental, electrical and computer, industrial and systems, and mechanical. There is no Other Disciplines section, which is the single most important structural fact for anyone sitting that exam. Other Disciplines candidates work almost entirely out of the general half.

The discipline sections vary enormously in size. Civil is the largest thing in the book. Electrical and computer is close behind. Industrial and systems is one of the smallest, which tells you something useful about where industrial candidates should actually spend their preparation.

The sections that need internal maps

Most sections are small enough that landing anywhere inside them is as good as landing on the right page. A handful are not, and those are the ones worth mapping.

Civil engineering runs through five distinct neighbourhoods in order: geotechnical, structural, water resources, transportation, and surveying with construction. Electrical and computer runs circuits, then signals and electronics, then digital and computing. Thermodynamics is largely property tables after its first third. Safety is mostly hazard assessment in the middle. Knowing those internal orders is the difference between opening a section and finding a page.

What is at the very back

After the discipline sections come the index and an appendix carrying the FE exam specifications for each discipline. The specifications are worth reading once, well before exam day, because they tell you how many questions each knowledge area carries and therefore where your preparation time is worth most.

Note that the version you use in the exam is not identical to the printed one: the introductory material, the index and the specifications are not included in the exam copy. So learn to navigate without the index, because on the day you will not have it.
