Statics of fluids, flow principles, losses, machinery, and measurement

What the section holds

Fluid property definitions, the behaviour of a static liquid including manometers and buoyancy, the one-dimensional flow principles built on continuity and energy, flow characterization by Reynolds number, the consequences of flow such as head loss and drag, characteristics of selected flow configurations, the impulse-momentum principle, compressible flow, fluid flow machinery, flow measurement, dimensional analysis and similitude, and aerodynamics.

Why it matters for your exam

Fluid mechanics carries a large question allocation on the Environmental and Other Disciplines specifications and a substantial one on Mechanical, Civil and Chemical. The Moody diagram lives in this section and is reached constantly.

How to navigate it

Two things to be able to reach without searching: the Moody diagram inside the head loss material, and the pump and turbine pages near the end. Civil candidates should note that open channel hydraulics is duplicated in more depth inside the civil section.
